Felix Mendelssohn and his Hawaiian Serenaders
That’s Frank Pickford, my Grandad, on piano (he was also the Musical Director). I think he’s doing a sterling job of looking at the camera and not the pretty lady sprawled across his piano.
I will have a better copy of this picture next week (this is just the original scan) but I was too excited not to share it. Most of my family think I’m mad for playing the uke when I started out as a sax player (a much cooler instrument in their eyes) so when I found this picture after Dad died, I felt completely vindicated.
The sad thing is, Dad & Grandad got separated when Dad was 5 years old and never saw each other again. It’s only in recent years that we’ve found out what an amazing life Grandad had and what a successful musician he was.
14.1.13 ETA I just received an email from the Principal Archivist of Green’s Playhouse Ballroom in Glasgow who tells me that this photo was taken on stage there. Apparently “Green’s was the best paying venue in Britain for dance bands.”
